Platelet Rich Plasma Injections
Platelet rich plasma injections also referred to as PRP injections, is a procedure that is used to treat and assist in the long term healing of several musculoskeletal injuries (tendons, muscles and joints).
The purpose of PRP injections is to accelerate and shorten the recovery process in chronic injuries and acute injuries.
When Is This Procedure Conducted?
PRP provides you with an alternative option to surgery, however evaluation is required to determine whether this treatment is a viable option for you.
PRP is used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal injuries:
- Tennis elbow
- Golfer’s elbow
- Jumper’s knee
- Achilles tendonitis
- Knee tendonitis
- Hamstring tendons
- Gluteal tendons
- Abductor tendons
- Rotator cuff tears
- Plantar fasciitis
How Does This Procedure Work?
PRP therapy uses your own blood and is collected in the same way blood is taken from you when you require blood tests or blood donations.
This blood will then be spun down in a centrifuge to separate the components. The process takes 15 minutes. The platelet rich plasma (PRP) is then harvested, which includes specially prepared platelets that are taken and then injected into joints or the surrounding affected area under ultrasound guidance to ensure accuracy. These platelets release substances known as “growth factors” that lead to tissue healing. By concentrating the platelets, it releases the growth factors, which promotes the healing of tendons and cartilage.
How Will I Feel After The Procedure?
After the procedure, you may feel sore for 2-3 days. Pain medication is usually prescribed.
You will need to rest for a few days after the injection so that the injected tissue is not being pushed too quickly and allows healing time.
How Successful Is Platelet Rich Plasma Injections?
With PRP therapy, you can expect to see significant improvement in your symptoms, return of functionality and elimination of the need for more traditional treatments such as medications, cortisone injections or surgery.
Research has shown that PRP therapy is more effective than cortisone injections and can provide long lasting relief due to the degenerative tissue starting to regenerate and regrow.
