About Interventional Radiology
Vascular and Interventional Radiology (VIR) is a medical sub-specialty of radiology, whereby a vast range of minimally invasive, targeted procedures are used to diagnose and treat diseases with the aid of cutting edge image guided technology.
Computerised tomography, X-ray, Ultra sound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging are used to guide the radiologist to accurately access the specific tissue or body part. These procedures are carried out by Interventional Radiology specialists: doctors who have undergone advanced training in minimally invasive, image guided diagnostic and therapeutic treatments.
Interventional radiology procedures can treat and diagnose a broad range of conditions for patients with cancer, pain, diabetes, liver, kidney, and other disease. Minimally invasive radiological based procedures involve less risk, less pain, shorter hospital stay and shorter recovery time compared to traditional surgical techniques.
Most interventional procedures can be performed in an outpatients setting. Some may require a short overnight hospital stay.
These procedures are generally performed under sedation (twilight anaesthetic). Read further information about Procedures with Sedation.
UCMI at The Wesley Hospital has a specially designated VIR clinic. The clinic is staffed with nine interventional radiologists with outstanding procedural and clinical competence. The clinic has a full-time VIR nurse who helps coordinate personalised care for our patients and assists with any concerns that may arise.
